For a thousand years, Greek athletes competed in sacred events, until their disappearance in the 4th century. In the 19th century, a French aristocrat, Pierre de Coubertin, transformed this heritage into a worldwide movement. The renaissance took place in Athens in 1896 with 200 champions from 14 countries. After devising the five rings, he went on to create the winter jousts in 1924.
